The Art of Breathing Project
Supported by a grant from the Kohler Foundation and Northwoods United Way, the Warehouse Community Art Center is pleased to announce a new FREE program that is open to adults age 55 and over. This online class is designed to help participants develop a daily sketch journaling practice that promotes mindfulness, emotional well-being and creativity. The class is open to anyone living in Vilas or Oneida County. The program consists of six 90-minute class sessions that will be offered on Zoom. The first 45 minutes of each class will focus on breathing techniques designed to cultivate mindfulness and overall well-being, while the next 45 minutes will include drawing instruction using a variety of media. Participants can then use these skills to institute their own daily sketch journal practice, a process that research has shown promotes positive emotion and resilience. Each class also provides a safe and supportive community where people can meet other adults who are living in the Northwoods.
Classes will be offered on six Wednesdays from 10:30 am to noon starting on January 27 and concluding on March 3, 2021. Class size will be limited to 30 participants; each person will be provided with a mixed-media journal and participants will be provided with an assortment of materials. In addition, to be eligible to join the class you must:
(1) be age 55 or over as of 1/20/21,
(2) have access to a computer and be able to set up a (free) Zoom account,
(3) have the physical ability to sit comfortably in a chair while engaging in gentle movement (ideally, you can move from a chair to the floor and then back to sitting),
(4) commit to attend all six sessions,
(5) be willing to let go of any judgment about your artistic talents and be open to
exploration and sharing this journey with others.
