This class is for students who are comfortable making their own wheel thrown or hand built work and want to explore new ways to decorate it. Each class will begin with instructor demonstrations in the morning followed by time in the afternoon for hands on practice and individual instruction.

Day one
will focus on carving and stamping techniques. We will look at both conventional clay tools and other objects that I use to make marks. We will discuss making and using clay stamps. I will do a short demo on decorative trimming for people who throw on the wheel. I will also demonstrate hand building small dishes using pottery forms and templates.

Day two
will focus on using slips and underglazes for sgraffito and inlay techniques. We will discuss composition and the use or source material for illustrations. Students will be encouraged to share techniques and products they have been successful with and to show examples of finished pieces they are proud of.

Price includes 12 hours of instruction, all of June Open Studio access, with glazing and firing. This class fee does not include clay. Students will bring their own clay and leather hard pieces to work with in class. You are encouraged to purchase clay from the Warehouse if needed. Please keep in mind pieces made with clay not purchased through the Warehouse cannot be fired there.

REGISTRATION DATE MAY 28
Amy will be emailing students the week before with instructions on what to bring to class, including almost leather hard pieces to work on.
Amy Higgason is a potter living year round in Lake Tomahawk. Her studio, Pigeon Road Pottery is celebrating its 20th anniversary in July 2025. Higgason moved to the Northwoods in 2003 to follow her dream of becoming a full time potter. She has been an active member of the art community here ever since. Amy is looking forward to teaching again at The Warehouse and describes her process this way, “I start with stoneware clay at the potter’s wheel or I hand build my pieces with clay slabs. Then I use a variety of illustration techniques including carving, stamping, and sgraffito to decorate my pieces. I strive to make my marks loose and spontaneous — as if they grew from the piece itself. It’s fine art with an everyday purpose — a marriage of function and expression with a nod to the natural world.” Learn more about her background and see more examples of her work at https://pigeonroadpottery.com.
