mend verb \ˈmend\ To mend: to make (something broken or damaged) usable again : to repair Screen shot 2016-06-24 at 2.10.20 PM(something broken or damaged) : to heal or cure (a broken bone, a sad feeling, etc.)

We’ve all but forgotten the age old art of mending. In this fun and creative workshop we’ll work on a variety of sewing-based mending techniques. We’ll begin with construction of a simple mending kit—a place to store our mending basics, a kit that can travel with us as needed. From there we’ll move on to “hidden mending”, learning a few techniques to do an artful, beautiful mend. Finally, we’ll play with “funky mending”, taking a look and trying our hand at a few fun new mending trends.

Margaret Jankowski is the Founder and Director of The Sewing Machine Project (SMP), a Madison-based nonprofit given to the collection and distribution of sewing machines to those in need. One of the SMP’s popular local initiatives is the mending program, where volunteers offer free mending at sites around Madison.
