In the guitar clinic, Ben will teach unaccompanied improvisation in a master class format. One of the most interesting aspects of the guitar is learning how to improvise by yourself, without any other players around. In other words, how can a single player make up music that sounds good without any rhythm instruments playing back up? Ben will sit down with students with their guitars in the Winter Studio for an hour. Together, the group will learn a variety of simple, but effective methods of improvisation that can be done without accompaniment. For example, the group will learn about using open strings to create drones, simple call and response riffs, and using simple bass lines while improvising. One of the great things about basic improvisation techniques is that they are appropriate for people of all skill levels. For new learners, they are a great step towards incorporating the theory of music into actual performance that can be done right away.
