Meet the Instructor:

Johanna Buwalda was born and raised in the Netherlands. She started taking art lessons at an early age and began learning about pottery around the age of 15 at a local ceramicist’s studio. Her interest in ceramics was influenced by her parents who collected mostly Dutch and German pottery and therefore many weekends were spent visiting studios, galleries and pottery exhibits in museums. During her time in college where she studied art therapy, Johanna worked in Museum Boymans van Beuningen which owns one of the largest ceramic collections in the Netherlands.

After some roaming around the world and living in various countries, she settled in Chicago in 1994 where she raised her children. Johanna has a Master Degree in Education in Early Childhood Development, and a Master Degree in Psychology. She is licensed to practice clinical counseling in both Illinois and Wisconsin. Johanna has over 30 years of experience as a therapist, administrator, and trainer working with survivors of war including refugees, torture survivors, development workers, and veterans in the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and the US. In Chicago, Johanna took pottery classes at Lill Street Art Center for better life/work/family balance, and further solidified her craft and design.

Since moving to the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin in 2018, Johanna now lives on the Wisconsin River with David and their two dogs. Johanna kayaks the Wisconsin river, maintains a vegetable garden, and takes endless hikes in the surrounding forests. She has established a home-based pottery studio where she further developed her pottery making skills. Johanna teaches all-level pottery classes at The Warehouse, and sells her work at as many regional art and craft fairs as she can. Her home studio is open by appointment or by chance.
