In this session of After School, Artist, with Debra Ketchum Jircik will lead an exploration into arts of Japan!

Oct 1: An introduction to our excursion to Japan and learning about floating ink on water to transfer it to paper – the ancient art of Suminigashi, a form of marbling which originated in the 12th century, creating patterns on paper.  Artists will use brushes to drop ink on water, create patterns by blowing on the surface and capturing their floating patterns paper.

Oct 8: Shodo – Japanese brush painting – Using Sumi ink, students will learn to use brushes to create Kanji characters and also do free brush strokes on large sheets of paper learning how movement affects their brush strokes.   As time permits, students will create their own “painting tool” to create unique marks on their large paintings.

Oct 15: Origami and Orizomegami – Students will learn the ancient art of Japanese paper folding with some simple folds to make three-dimensional shapes and then introduce adding colored dyes to folded paper to create patterned papers.

Oct 22: Japan Blue/ Shibori Dye – Students will take their knowledge of folding and pattern making onto cloth as they learn about Japan Blue, the magic of indigo dye, and the art of shibori.  Each student will use folding and clamping techniques (itajime) to make patterns as they dip their bandana in a vat of indigo (Japan Blue) dye.

Oct 29: Art Inspired by Yayoi Kusama – Students will learn about and be inspired by artist Yayoi Kusama. Through using her motif of dots and patterns, students will paint their own gourd/pumpkin and as time permits we’ll create our own infinity dot environment.
